As a beginner sewer, sometimes nothing can be more daunting.
Even terms can be insanely confusing.
The best way to learn how to follow a sewing tutorial effectively, is by learning everything in an easy to follow course.
I love this because it’s a large capacity pencil case sewing pattern!
So, if you didn’t want to buy a large capacity pencil case and still wanted to make one for back to school, this one is a great option.
It holds so much and it’s a great pencil bag for budding artists to store all of their favourite supplies. This is a pattern and a sewing tutorial all in one.
I would love to create one of these super cute patchwork pencil cases with lots of Lecien Fabric like this stuff.
When it comes to the inner material, I would recommend lining with oilcloth or a treated cotton.
And if you study art or anything ALWAYS put a cap on your craft knives. Seriously, I can’t tell you how many pencil cases I’ve sliced right through! For some reason, (I wonder why ?)
I cannot look at this photo with the little name in the bottom corner without Julie Andrews singing in my head!
This is definitely a fat quarter friendly pencil pouch for all of those yummy school supplies.

This Etsy store has tonnes of 5 star reviews but this was the most useful that I found;

A rather beautiful flat pencil case tutorial that can easily be created using some pretty contrasting material.
Petals To Picots
It can be made a little sturdier depending on the type of yarn you use, you could even use bakers twine to make it super sturdy.
It’s also possible to do a little recycling and stick a paper towel tube in there to make it super sturdy!
There are some crackers cans (depending on what country you’re in) which are like slim, mini pringles cans which are the perfect size for a pencil case. Keep an eye out at the grocery store!
You could create this super simple pencil case with only one fabric to make the sewing project much faster.
For a pretty, feminine pencil case, I would definitely use contrasting Lecien Fabrics (because I’m obsessed!) with block colours or even different patterns of Lecien material.

Back To School Season This Year Is Weird
It’s because most areas have different requirements. Those who can keep their kids at home definitely should, for safety reasons.
They might be fine if they get infected with Covid-19 but say goodbye to Grandma and Grandpa and any sick relatives you may already have.
A relative of mine used the “people survive” excuse for thinking it was a hoax despite almost all of his direct relatives having the most serious of pre-existing conditions and I had to point out that surviving an illness or near-death experience can change your life irreparably for life.
Surviving a potentially fatal virus and still having the ability to thrive in life is not the same thing.
Those who don’t know my story I’m going to give a condensed version:
- I was born double-jointed with some other random health issues but it was a fun party trick
- In my early 20’s I got mercury poisoning and almost died
- Developed a seizure disorder and was exhausted all of the time
- After 8 Years of being treated like I was making it up, I got my diagnosis of Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome – hypermobility (it’s counted in levels and I shot up a few from ‘not serious’ to ‘potentially fatal’). It’s all directly connected to being ‘double-jointed’ except now my connective tissue in my entire body is useless. I can bump into a door and dislocate my shoulder, I’ve been housebound ever since (11 years ago) and if I do have to go to places for appointments, I need my wheelchair because I cannot travel to the end of my driveway or garden without needing to crumple on the floor in both pain and exhaustion.
- My eyes are affected (takes a lot longer to focus and react to light), I need to get regular tests performed to ensure the connective tissue around my heart is still functioning, my weight-bearing joints are in constant pain and every morning when I wake up I feel like my body has been put through a mangle.
The point being, you can survive something but unless you have a free health care system like the NHS and prescriptions as I do in Northern Ireland, how the hell is anyone supposed to thrive in life when they’re in agony, don’t sleep and can’t afford the medication they need?
If your country doesn’t have a trusted health service, then you should be doing everything in your power to protect yourself and the others around you. As a common courtesy to fellow humans.
I know you’re smart and know all the health and safety info but certain people are getting complacent and it’s important to share reminders.

Teaching your kids to sew is an amazing life skill to have and I’m incredibly grateful to my Granny who taught me how to sew when I was younger.
By the time I was 14 I was 6’0 tall so you can imagine the unpicking of hems that had to happen! I ended up learning how to make clothes until clothes companies realised tall ladies existed and had money also 🤣.
So feel free to make this DIY pencil case experience truly something they will remember. You might not receive the gratitude until they’re adults, but it will come!
