Inspired by the mathematical Fibonacci Sequence, London-born artist Ivan Black created an interactive kinetic sculpture called Square Wave that creates mesmerizing optical illusions when it spins. The Fibonacci formula is often referred to as “nature’s secret code,” and is said to command the form of every living thing. Black’s kinetic toy cleverly combines natural forms with the mathematical formula to create a seamlessly integrated mechanism.
Square Wave comprises 21 connected metal rods which curve and change with human interaction. Available in 3 finishes—metallic silver, eclipse bronze, and lunar gold—the sculpture was manufactured in a factory in Italy using metal machinery and assembled by hand. “Square Wave is the results of years of prototyping and iterations,” says Black on Kickstarter. “Tiny hand-made tweaks and adjustments were made in order to find the smoothest balance between weight and length of the metal rods.”
The minimalist art piece can be used as a decorative hanging ornament, but it’s also designed to reduce stress. Watching Square Wave spin is totally hypnotic and reveals how “order silently governs our seemingly disorderly world.”
You can find out more about Square Wave and support the project on Kickstarter.
