When I started art journaling in about 2007, I had NO idea what I was doing! Having a resource like this would have been incredible but I actually learned about mixed media techniques from a book, to begin with.

Then, when I was learned more about working in journals from random free guides.

Explore techniques for easily mixing complementary colors. Next, make color temperature simple as you create a two-primary color chart. Progress to painting a simple, beautiful still life using a pair of complementary colors. Then, mix clean secondary and tertiary colors that are bright or dull, and apply your new skills to paint a lovely purple flower. Move on to mixing natural-looking green hues to open up a landscape of painting possibilities. Plus, apply what you've learned to paint a pastoral landscape with both vivid and muted hues using a two-primary palette.

Basic paint brush strokes video tutorial - Decorative painting is made up of different types of basic painting strokes and is rather like learning to write. Different brushes create different effects using the same strokes. My video at the end of this post shows you what they look like with different brushes. The best advice I can give you is to practice, practice and practice some more. Many instructors say you should just practice the actual strokes alone, over and over, and over again.

You can buy yourself tubes or cakes of watercolor. Here I have Talens transparent watercolor set. They come in a nice travel-sized set. I use these most because they’re so compact, pack up quickly and the pigments are great. I never know how much time I’m going to get to paint, so I have to be able to clean up at a moment’s notice. I have a tube set with a giant palette, but I never use those. The palette takes up too much space (I typically paint in chaos, when there’s not much clean desk space around). I like to have a variety of brushes as well. To start, you’ll want a 4 round, 8 round (make sure they have sharp points) and a broad flat. The big ones get expensive really fast, but they’re worth every penny. They’ll last forever (mine are 10 years old and still going strong). I prefer synthetic brushes, but not everyone feels the same way.
