In her ongoing body of work, American artist Samantha Rueter loves to paint women lost in a quiet, reflective moment.

Taking inspiration from the female characters often seen bathing in Renaissance art, Samantha’s calm characters remind us to take some timeout before we throw ourselves back into today’s fast-paced world.

“These bather compositions work to slow time,” Samantha tells Creative Boom. “The slow sip of coffee after a shower, the pull of a cigarette while reading the morning news; all moments solidified peacefully on canvas before the day has stolen them. It’s in these moments many seem to weigh decisions, manifest goals and dreams or perform rituals of self-care. Creating large compositions of these frozen habits visually represents the significance of this time.”

There is certainly something to be said for these intimate moments. Where one has taken the time to value oneself before going out into the world. Each acrylic-on-canvas piece is formed using live models, allowing the women to choose their pose; expressing a true sense of who they are, what they are feeling or going through.

“There is no judgment, over-sexualized emotion, or power struggle,” she continues, “each is present – in these towels, in these robes – enjoying the stillness. There is a vulnerability that allows viewers to relate and appreciate that sense of calm in their own lives… if only for a moment.”

Born and raised in The Hudson Valley, Samantha Rueter graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2013 and has been painting ever since. Her work has been featured on Saatchi Art, World Interiors Magazine, and can be found in private collections around the world. Her work consists of bold, expressive colour palettes paired with the sophistication of the female form.
