“Florida Noir” by Artist Emile Mausner
An exploration of Florida’s seedy underbelly by artist Emile Mausner. Based on advertising imagery from vintage postcards, filled with glamorous poses and promises of a tropical paradise, Mausner takes on the idea of utopia and the immense contradictions entailed within it.
“In this body of work, I have recast the familiar signs of Floridian life within a mythic narrative that speaks of history and future, while ever eluding the present. Inspired by the peculiar past-less feeling of suburban development, I wanted to evoke recognition without remembrance. Feminine figures and rituals refer to Florida as a figurative birthing ground: enigmatically, these figures signal the ripeness of their territory, which, try as you might, you may never precisely locate.”
