Jérémy Demester’s paintings carry both vivid movement and spontaneity. In his current show at Galerie Max Hetzler, titled “FTW,” the artist offers new paintings and sculptures that are part of a poetic narrative surrounding all of the works in the show. And the sculpture is at the center of it all.

“The sculpture representing a hermit is at the origin of the exhibition ‘FTW,’” the gallery says. “A vagabond dressed in frayed rags, with his blind human eyes, he made an amphora his home, living one day at a time. He is Diogenes the Cynic. Indifferent to cultural conventions, he discourses, eats and masturbates in public. Carrying a lamp in full daylight, he wanders around the city looking for a human being, repeating tirelessly ‘I am looking for a man’ to each stranger he meets.” The statement goes on to describe the relationship of each painting to the narrative, offering new riddles to unlock.
