Spring is definitely in the air and this cute paper plate sheep craft is a great way to welcome it in. Not only is it cute but it’s a great sheep craft for preschoolers and younger kids too as it’s an easy way for them to practice scissor skills and as well as being fun to make it makes a great decoration too – perfect if you’re looking for something you can display afterwards!

To make this sheep craft start by cutting a spiral shape into a paper plate. I did try to video a little tutorial for this but my video cut out just before I finished – argh! If you’d like to check how to make it it follows the basic principles of the snowman twirler in the video below – just with a sheep theme rather than a snowman one.

Once you’ve cut the spiral tape a bit of yarn to the back of the centre so that you can hang your paper plate twirler up later. Next is your sheep’s face. Cut this out of black card and stick it on to the centre of your paper plate using glue or double sided sellotape. I prefer tape for this as it tends to hold it in place a bit better if your kids are playing with this a lot but a pva style glue should also work. (PVA is basically school glue, I think Elmers in the US?)

To make your eyes either cut some out of white paper or card and draw in some eyeballs with a black pen or stick on some googly eyes. Finally cut some legs out of black card and stick those on too and your paper plate sheep is ready to go!

Sheep Books for Kids

I love a themed book as a way to extend an activity a bit and I figure you can never read too many books with your kids either?! These sheep themed books all look great

  • Sheep Won’t Sleep by Judy Cox – a cute looking book with an introduction to counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
  • What The Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson – set on a farm rather than just about sheep (although there is a sheep in it) this is one of our favourites
  • Timmy’s Seaside Rescue by Aardman – I really like the Shaun the Sheep and Timmy Time programmes and this book is one my kids enjoyed.
