Why Do You Need To Teach Scissor Skills?

Vanessa at Pre-K Pages discusses how “The opening and closing motion of cutting with scissors helps children develop the small muscles in their hands otherwise known as fine motor skills.” in their article on Tips for Teaching Scissor Cutting Skills.

Fine motor skills are obviously really important for kids as they learn to use pencils, cutlery and get dressed themselves.

There’s also loads of crafts that involve using scissors in some way so it’s a really helpful skill to have.

Easy Flower Scissor Skills Activity

Start by drawing the stem and leaves of the flowers onto your paper then it’s time to get making the flower petals.

Taking your cupcake liners cut into the edges around each one, this is a really nice, simple activity because of course there’s no ‘right’ way to cut them and it doesn’t matter if your petals are big, small or a bit lopsided, in fact I think they look even nicer if they’re all a bit different!

Smooth the petals from your cupcake flowers out a bit and then glue them onto your stems from earlier.

If you’d like to decorate your flowers then you could stick mini pom poms in them, some stickers or maybe some sunflower seeds – all of these would be good for fine motor skills too.
