Sebastián Gutiérrez crafts two-layered portraits that reveal something less elegant beneath the surface. This particular series from the Puerto Rican artist, titled “Inner Beauty,” is a study in contrast. A statement says that “though his main medium is oil paint, its usually presented on everyday items such as doors, rugs, windows or toys; he wants to give the spectator an instant sense of familiarity.”

“His work focuses on the influence of identity on personal behavior and lust as protagonist in public environments,” the artist’s site says. “The subject matter is majorly derived from self-development manifested in relation with the everyday coexisting stranger. Sebastián also pulls influences as wide ranging as vintage fashion editorials and illustrations, interior design and cartoons, to create pieces that reveal eye opening ideas learned through contrast.”
