Whale Diving Underwater by Jasmine Carey

Australian photographer Jasmine Carey is passionate about marine life. She spends much of her time underwater focusing on the incredible beauty of whales. Her underwater photography gives a dynamic and artistic look at these majestic marine mammals. Through her lens, we’re able to see them dive, swim, and bond as a family unit.

Carey also passes time helping others get the same special experience by assisting with whale encounters with fellow photographer Darren Jew. Together, they help travelers come face to face with whales in locations from Tonga to Norway, taking care to ensure that these animals are kept safe and undisturbed by the visitors.

For Jasmine, working on these whale experiences is a way to keep her love of the ocean fresh. “It’s the awe and the eyes as big as dinner plates that I see from our guests whether it be from swimming with whales, diving, or snorkeling in the magical world of the ocean,” Carey tells My Modern Met. “It’s just so revitalizing and gives me so much joy to see this new outlook, this new zest for ‘life,’ not only their own but for the animals, the planet. There’s that moment when their penny drops and you can see in their eyes, a new sparkle, they’ve fallen in love, I refer to this as having their ‘whale moment.’ It’s such a special feeling, it’s different for each and every soul.”

In helping others connect with the ocean and the creatures who live there, Carey hopes to make a positive impact on the planet. “It is life changing, it is healing and it is awakening but most of all I believe it is connecting,” she explains. “From that moment on you are connected and you will make positive changes for the betterment of the environment, others and yourself. I find so much motivation and joy in witnessing that.”

For those who may never have the opportunity to have their “whale experience” firsthand, Carey’s photography helps bring the experience to life. By showing the different light, angles, and emotions of life underwater, she’s casting a spotlight on how positive change for the environment affects more than just us. “I hope that if I can stir and awaken people’s emotions and thoughts with my photos, their own connection will be strong, deep, and give them empowerment.”
