In this guide I’m going to cover the different types of substrates (surfaces), pigments and the basic supplies you would need for a standard art therapy session where watercolours are involved.

Art therapy is so insanely important to me, I’ve shared my story many times before but art has been one of the best things I’ve ever discovered. I became housebound and disabled in 2009 because of a debilitating illness I experienced after coming down with metallic poisoning.
My EDS switched levels from “party trick” double jointedness into “bedbound and experiencing partial interior dislocations while sleeping” EDS plus another bucket of conditions. During the bedbound years, I decided to learn how to draw and paint as I wouldn’t have to talk, which I couldn’t. I wouldn’t have to walk, which I couldn’t and I didn’t even need to sit up right, which is still challenging, even all these years later.
Now, I’m creative on a daily basis and I’ve set up my craft space to encourage daily creativity. I went on that journey alone but you don’t have to.
CreateRoom have created an insanely effective, condensed version of the 30 Day Craft Room Transformation Challenge to help you discover your creative personality and how you can set up your space to reflect that and encourage daily creativity.
Couldn’t be bothered to do it daily? Did you know that it’s been scientifically proven that a crafting or arty session can be just as effective as a therapy session?

Traditionally, watercolour papers are coated in a gelatin-based glue. Gelatin is the collagen extracted from the connective tissues from animals – something that cuts very close to the bone as I suffer from a rare connective disorder which has left me permanently disabled. So, no collagen or gelatin for me. This is done to make the paper less porous.
Rough and Cold Pressed watercolour papers:
These tend to be made using a machine which uses wool to give the paper a certain texture. A lot of these papers wouldn’t be considered vegan because wool is an animal byproduct.
However, I’m fully aware that sheep need to be sheared in order to stay healthy. Truthfully, it’s a grey area and down to the discretion of the vegan, as it’s the only aspect of the process which isn’t vegan but could still be considered cruelty free.
Best Cruelty Free Vegan Watercolour Paper Brands:
In this section I’m sharing the brand that has products which are not cruelty free so you need to watch out when purchasing:
Strathmore Papers – All of their other papers are vegan friendly and only use plant-based and synthetic sizing, excluding the 500 Series Gemini Watercolour Paper which uses an animal byproduct to size the paper.
