Weather is a really fun subject to learn about but many kids (like us adults) like to learn about things in a hands on way.

Art inspired by the weather is a good way to get creative while backing up your learning about weather – or of course it’s just a fun thing to do in it’s own right!

Even if you aren’t particularly ‘studying weather’ right now it’s a really nice topic to refer to as, well, there’s always weather going on isn’t there? If it’s a rainy day make some rain art, if it’s a snowy day lets make some snowy weather art. This is a good one for all year round!

Weather art projects for kids

Rain Art Ideas

Rain Art – This easy rain art idea uses a free template for an easy activity. Plus we share how to make it if it’s not raining outside too!

Pom Pom Printed Rain – grab those pom poms from the back of your craft drawer and paint this easy rain craft.

Rain Gravity Painting – This idea from A Little Pinch of Perfect uses gravity to make a great activity that kids will love.

Sun Art Ideas

Sun Craft for Toddlers – This paper plate sun was a collaborative project between my daughter who was a toddler at the time, my son who was a preschooler and with a bit of help from myself. It’s super cheerful and remains one of my favourites!

Doily Sun – Grab your watercolours and create this sweet doily sun.

Coffee Filter Sun – I Heart Crafty Things makes some great sun art for kids using a coffee filter.

Shadow Art – Not so much one that creates a sun itself, but for an art idea that uses the sun instead why not try some shadow drawing? Simply take some items outside (small kids toys are perfect for this) and place them on a sheet of white paper then get your child to draw around the shadow that they make. You can then draw or colour the outline in if you would like or why not leave the drawing and toy out to see later in the day if the shadow has moved.

Wind Art Ideas

Wind Painting – Painting the wind is obviously going to be a bit of a tricky one but The Keeper Of The Memories has a great tried and tested idea using process art to make a painting that looks great as well as being educational.

Thunder and Lightning Art Ideas

Paint Splat Thundercloud – This thundercloud craft for kids uses splat painting making it really easy for young children to join in with. Practice scissor skills to make the lightning or for toddlers and preschoolers cut out the shape and have them glue it.

Snow Art Ideas

Snowflake Art – grab the paints and any decorations you can find and get creative with these paper plate snowflakes.

Snowy Tree Art – Using our free tree templates make these easy winter tree painting ideas. We’ve shared three activities but it’s an idea that’s easy to change up too depending on what materials you have at home.

Paper Plate Snow Covered Tree – Don’t mind messy fingers? Try making this paper plate winter tree craft. If your child isn’t keen on finger painting then you could easily swap this for painting with foil or pom poms.

Rainbow Art Ideas

Potato Masher Rainbow – This rainbow art idea for toddlers is super easy, just grab the paints and have a rummage through your kitchen cupboard for the materials!

Straw Blowing Rainbow Art – This tutorial from Arty Crafty Kids looks gorgeous and is a fun way to create your own rainbow art.

Rainbow Art – We tried out some easy rainbow art ideas including painting a rainbow with Lego.
